The updated energy management standard has been released – helping you to achieve continual improvement in energy performance.

The energy management standard, ISO 50001, was revised to make it even more effective to tackle the world’s energy challenges. Released on 21 August 2018, ISO 50001:2018, Energy management systems – Requirements with guidance for use, is a strategic tool that helps organizations put in place an energy management system and use their energy more efficiently and effectively. It features updated terms and definitions, and greater clarification of certain energy performance concepts.

Its predecessor, ISO 50001:2011, will be withdrawn. The transition deadline, confirmed by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), is three years from publication date. To keep a certificate valid after this deadline, organizations need to make sure their certificate is transitioned during the 3-year period.

Certification bodies, such as DNV, are required to stop performing audits according to ISO 50001:2011 eighteen months after publication date. This means that certified companies need to plan accordingly. If not done so already, we recommend to start the preparations for the transition now, to ensure a smooth process.

ISO 50001 provides requirements for a systematic, data-driven and facts-based process, focused on continually improving energy performance. The key explicit intended outcome from implementing the standard is to achieve continual improvement in energy performance and the energy management system.

Choose the transition package that suits your needs

DNV can guide you from preparations to transition to the new standard. As different companies need different levels of support to transition, we have prepared three transition packages that can support you on your transition journey. They include everything from basic awareness sessions and material to self-assessments and migration audits.
